download (8)Halloween is one of the very best times of the year for the gifted DIYer, and if that’s you, more power to you, your talents have my unending respect. However, there are a whole legion of us OTHER folks who need to get our kids outfitted and looking adorable for Halloween and many of us don’t want to spend a lot of money on those cheap store costumes. There are simple ways for the non-sewing moms of the world to get creative for their kids’ Halloween looks, and a lot of it can have to do with makeup. Giving your child a fun or spooky face with makeup to go along with their outfit can be the perfect finishing touch to their costume.

The first tip for doing your children’s Halloween makeup is to look through your existing cosmetics stash before you hit the store. Remember that green cream eye shadow that seemed like such a great idea to go with that one outfit? That might have been a big mistake, but that unused shadow could be the ideal way to create a little wicked witch or Shrek look. After you’ve rounded up what you already have, head to the store for some inexpensive supplies. Pick up cream shadows and liners and greasepaint sticks that come in bold colors. Be sure to use just a tiny bit of cold cream on their faces first; not enough to make the skin greasy and cause the makeup not to adhere to their faces. Just a bit of cold cream will help the makeup come off more easily at the end of the night. You might not feel like a true makeup artist, but makeup is so much safer and cuter than those awful masks. Give it a try, you might surprise yourself.
